On one occasion the driver of a prison van generally known as "Black Maria" distinguished himself by bis ready wit. A would-be wag on the footpath hailed him with: " Got any room Robert?" " GUere's roonv for one," replied the driver; "we kep' it for you."' Not entirely disconcerted, the wit made another nhot> ".What's, your fare ?". he 'asked. The answer, however, entirely extinguished Tiim, lor the driver replied: " and waterr-the same as you had before," . V Walt Wbjjtniah, who ; was called upon-by a Jfcry learned professor, asked the latter kindly: '* And Iwhat ck> you do ?" " u He said that he held the chair, of metaphysics and at Ills university. The old poet gave a reassuring smile, as one who encourages a chi;J, and answered:. "Logic and metaphysics; ah, yes, I suppose we. have to have people to look after Jue&e -aungs even if they don't exjst,"
