ANGLING.

Anglers will oblige by forwarding to this office itewsof interest during the season.

The snow storm yesterday afternoon was not heavy enough to chill the enthusiasm of a few of the local fishermen, some of whom went up the Leith yesterday afternoon. We do not know how t,hey all fared, but Messrs V- Aitken and H. Cruse secured a few trout. The following ts.kep.are to hand :-Ou the Wairekiki Mr W. barter, of Mataura, landed 20 fish, weighing in all ifclb. On the Mimihau Mr R. Kidd caus-ht 28 fish, averaging l.}lb. The Canterbury anglers appear to have had good sport, the following takes being recorded :-L. Brightliog, A. Tacon, and S. Monck 11 £sh, averaging 2Mb ; A. Swans- ' ton 8 fish, average 2Mb ; two Christchurch anglers 12 fish, all from the Lower Selwyn, on Saturday ; J. Clapham 7 fish, 101b; largest 4;ib, do, Monday, 1 fish ; a Christchurch angler ? fish, the largest 2Mb, from the Avon; &tr Anderson J fish, W. Pateman 1 fish, Kaiapoi angler } fish, -7Mb, from the Waimakariri. The • Wyndham Herald' repofto tflat #n the openiDg day tho streams in that district were ,on the hi«h side after the rain of the previous .day, and the fish, having gorged themselves with food in the morning, were not greedy again uoiil well on in the afternoon. This statement w best verified, perhaps, by the experience of Messrs Ja;nes and Robert Kidd (brothers), who went out after .dinner, and by sunset had landed n trout, weighing 291b. Their catch was a remarkably even - sized and wellconditioned lot of fish, all of them being lured with the worm in the Mimihau. The opening-day competition under the auspices of the Wyndham Anglers' Society took place on Saturday, when there were a dozen entrants. The conditions were-any bait any stream ; hours, eight to five, lhe streams generally were somewhat high, ltie weigh-in took pla*e at Mrs Blackley's Railway Hotel, wh«u Mr Bremner (secretary) announced the following weight* and positions Messrs Greenshields and inomsop being penalised 10 per cent. -.-Ist, Harry 5X5. *lB fish, 28}lb; Bacl. J. A. Dodd 0 fish, 13lb 6"z; 3rd, A. Thomson, 4 fish, 121b • 4th. A. Simpson, & fish, 91b Uoz; Sjohn Greenshields, 5 ton. WMb. The heaviest fish was 2Jlb, Messrs Allan and Thomson having one apiece. There was abe » wedgh-in jtjb Wairekiki, but as no

report has yet.been received it ia-pretty sate to conclude tliere are no heavy baskets there. V Ranger Deans reports that the rivers round about Clinton are all in good condition, but the snow water has made the water rather cold for successful fishing. He specially mentions the Waiwera as being in excellent order. On the Ist Mr Tafler, o: Clinton, was very successful on the Kuriwau. The rivers in the Southland Western district have been in a state of flood for several days past, and on the Ist, when anglers were expecting a good time, they were black with sediment, making successful fishing impossible. Notwithstanding this drawback Mr R. M 'Galium hooked nine fish in the Aparima, the total weight being 44$lb, the largest turning tho scale at 6slb. Another resident (says the * Western News') obtained a basket totalling 201b, the heaviest of which weighed 9lb. Boih anglers used artificial minnows. The Dipton correspondent of the Southland «Daily News' writes :—" The weather is very boisterous at present. The river is in a state of flood, as also are the hill creeks. Angling for the time being is altogether out of question. Should there be no more rain belore the end of the week the Otapiri and Lora ought then to be in good form. Under favorable circumstances, the Oreti ought to give good sport by yie middle of next week." Anglers were busy with rod and line on the Pomahaka and its tributaries on Saturday morning, but most of the streams were rather high for successful fishing. No baskets of consequence were reported.
