THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

AGAINST VICTORIA. [Peb Press Association.—Copyright.] MELBOURNE, November 10. Requiring 304 runs to win, the Englishmen began their second innings, Maclaren and Mason defending. The former was dismissed for 10. Ranjitsinhji filled the vacancy, and, with Mason, made a good stand,_ the former scoring 64 before he was dismissed. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 122 for two wickets— Mason (not out) 44, Hayward (not out) 3. The match concluded this afternoon, the Englishmen winning by two wickets. The interest in the game was maintained to the last, and the attendance in the afternoon was very large. The rapid dismissal of Stoddart (who put the first ball he received into point’s hands), Hayward, Wainwright, Hirst, and the misfortune that befell Storer (run out when fairly set and batting freely) raised the hopes of the Victorians. Mason’s obstinate and splendid defence turned the tide, and as the tall batsman, whose effective cutting and driving was the feature of the match, was not troubled by the frequent changes of bowling and the fastwearing wicket, he kept the scorers busily employed, and hopes of victory soon vanished. Mason’s plucky uphill fight earned for him an ovation on his return to the pavilion. While he was in partnership with Ranjitsinhji and Storer the scoring was exceptionally ■ merry. The Indian Prince was out leg before to Trumble. His innings was a fine sample of all-round cricket, though just before he retired he gave Trumble a hot chance in the slips. ’ Scores :
