PORT CHALMERS. SAlLED.— August 24. Napier, s.s., 48 tons, Matheson, for Invercargill Tarawera, s.s., 1,269 tons. Richardson, for Sydney via the East Coast. Father Coffey; thirteen steerage. The Napier left the Rattray street wharf this afternoon for Invercargill. Boat and fire drill was carried out on board the s.s. Waikare at the tongue wharf this morning. The Tarawera left Dunedin wharf this afternoon for Sydney via the East Coast ports.

THE WAKATIPU IN A GALE On her voyage from Sydney the Wakatipu, which arrived at Wellington yesterday afternoon, experienced very severe weather. Shortly after leaving Sydney on Wednesday she encountered a heavy S.S.W. gale, which necessitated her being hove-to for a time. On the weather improving she continued her voyage, but after running about 300 miles met another gale, and the vessel had to be kept with her head to the sea for fifteen hours. The starboard lifeboat was smashed, gs well as portion of the railings and deck fittings. A number of horses were on board and suffered severely from the sea, which swept the ship from stem to stern. On their arrival the passengers presented Captain Macdonald and the officers with a testimonial congratulating them on the seamanship they displayed. THE YOLANDE. The Yolande was one of the staunchest and best-fitted class of boats engaged in the timber trade between this colony and Australia. She was built in 1883 by D. and E. Campbell, of Nova Scotia, and her dimensions were: —Length, 140 ft bin; breadth. 31ft; depth, 12ft Sin. Her tonnage ' va s; Gross, 415 tons; under deck, 366 ; net, 395. In 1889 she was purchased from Mr G. W, Owen, of Auckland, by Messrs Murray, Arnold, and Co., who have ever since utilised her in the timber trade. The tug must have picked up the T olande a long way out to sea, as the tow-line parted four miles from the bar. Captain H. Macdonald is in command of the vessel, which left the Clarence Elver on 31st July with iSO,oooft of timber, principally piles and hardwood for the railways and wharf extension contract.
