A collision occurred in the English Channel between the cruiser Phaeton and the torpedo-boat destroyer Thrasher, belonging to the British Squadron. The Thrasher was badly damaged, and one of her crew lost his life.

In honor of his visit to Ireland, the Duke of York has been sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, and he and Lord Roberts have been invested as Knights of the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick. The funeral of Sir William Jervois was attended by a number of representative colonists.

Chief Justice Way, the Australian member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, has beard thirteen appeals and delivered one judgment. Sir Robert Giffen retires from the position of Controller-General of the Commercial, Labor, r.ud Statistical Department of the Board of Trade, and will be succeeded by Mr A. E. Bateman, Deputy ControllerGeneral.
