DIAMOND JUBILEE HOLIDAYS.

TO THB EDITOR. Sir,—l think that if some of those indiviluals who proposed such schemes as supplying free gas for illuminations iii connection with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and other like nonsensical ideas were to devote their energies iu the direction ,of getting a reduction in the hours that the s!iop assistants will have to work thai week they would have the**hearty thanks and appreciation of those affected. Although it is a fict that the 22nd is to be observed as a i oliday, still the hands wi'd have to work lite the night before, miss their usuil Wednesday half-holiday, and hive another late night on Saturday, besides which a number of employ*'j will have to go in ou the 22ud to see after the illuminations. Truly a splendid holiday season in which to commemorate an event that will not occur again to a Sovereign of Great Britain in any of our lives. Trusting that s >meone else will agitate in this direction— I am, etc., Not a Member ov Retailers' Association. Dunedin, June IC.
