EDUCATION BOARD.
* The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was held this afternoon, when there were present—Messrs D. Borrie (chairman), H. ClarL-, W. Snow, J. J. Ritnsay, J. M. Gallaway, J. F. M. Fraser, and the Hon. J. MacGregor. JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP REGULATIONS. The Secretarv to the Education Department, Wellington, wrote:—"ln reply to your memorandum of the 3lst May, J have to inform you that if the proposal referred to therein conies before the Minister of E ideation as one for the amendment of the i scholarship regulations he will give his coilBent, but otherwise he can take no responsibility in the matter." It was agreed, on the motion of Mr Gallaway seconded by Mr Snow—" That the Minister of Education bo requested to §ive effect to the resolution of the Board, ated 20th May last, by consenting to tho amendment of the junior scholarship regulation by the substitution of the regulation dated 15th March, 189t, for the regulation dated 15th July, 1896. SORTII-EAST VALLEY OYMNASIUM. The Secretary of the North-east Valley Sohool Committee wrote asking for £2OO towards the erection of a gymnasium to cost £4OO. ' geveral members characterised such an expenditure as extravagance, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Clark, seconded by Mr Fraser, that the Committee be granted a subsidy of £ for £, the amount liot to exceed £l5O. It was agreed that this resolution should stand good iu regard to all similar applications. CORRESPONDENCE. An invitation by the Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the members of the Board to be present at the opening of the hall on Wednesday was accepted with thanks. ' The Kaitangata Coal Company wrote asking the Board to draw the attention of teachers to a concert to be given in the Agricultural Buildings by the company on the 2nd July, at. which all school children of the district are to be invited Jt was resolved that the company be thanked for their offer, and that the secretary communicate with the staffs of all the schools in and around Punediu rfques'ing them to make a point of attending with their respective standards. : The Free Public Library Committee wrote asking if the Normal School was for sale, and if so at what price.—lt was decided to reply that the schools was not for sals.
