The Match Committee, in picking tbe teams, it necessary to omit from their selections the Otago players who are engaged in the inter-island match at Wellington. OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held yesterday. The President and Secretary reported the effect of interviews they had had with the secretary of the Canterbury Union (Mr W. G. Garrard) on the subject of the Canter-bury-Otago appeal, Committee decided to take no further action in the matter at present. A letter from tbe Kaikorai Club asking a ruling from the Committee as to the right of a team to a scrummage upon the ball going into tonch was referred to the Referees’ Association, and the secretary was instructed to draw the attention of the Association to the provision on-the point. It was also decided to request the Referees’ Association to consider the advisability of referees placing the ball in the scrummage, and it was resolved to communicate with the unions which were expected to send teams to Otago this year as to the practice adopted in their respective districts. A letter having been read from the Kaikorai Club pointing out that five of their members were engaged in the inter-island match on the •26th inst., and asking if the union would postpone tbe fixtures for that date, the secretary was instructed to convene a meeting of secretaries of clubs for Wednesday afternoon to consider the matter. At the request of the Zingari - Rieh- - mond Club, the consideration of the matter of the suggested arrangement between that club and the Kaikorai was further deferred. A letter was read from the Owaka Club, from which it appeared that the clubs in South Otago had neglected to make satisfactory provision for the selection of .a team to represent them in tbe matches in Diamond Jubilee week, and Mr M’Laren was authorised to visit Balclntha, Milton, and the Taieri, and complete arrangements. Mr J. R. M‘Gonnochie, referee in tbe Kaikorai-Alhambra match last Saturday, wrote reporting James Torrance, of the former team, for insolence. Consideration was deferred pending the receipt of a reply from the player in question. A sub-committee reported that arrangements had been made for the reception and accommodation of the North and South Otago teams.

the dlitriot, add the matter li bwttght under the immediate attention of our readere by (he following communication from Mr A. R. Lawry, hon. secretary of the Gaversbam Football Club, which .we have been asked to publish" In commemoration of the record reign 1 should like to throw out a suggestion to the rSstdente of Gaversbam, and that is that in recognition of the great event to be celebrated this month a suitable recreation ground be procured for the district. I should like to point out that a ground has been the chief difficulty the Caversham Football Club have had to contend with ever sinoe the formation of the club, and now, after all their efforts, they have lost the last available section suitable for such a game. The cricket club will also have to disband, after all their hard work in forming the ground. I trust the Borough Fathers will give the above proposal the consideration it deserves, and 1 have no hesitation in saying that, if a considerable sum were raised, on a petition to Government they would respond with a handsome subsidy.” _________
