WORK AND WAGES.
The report in the ‘ Labor Journal ’ for June upon the market in Dunedin is as follows : Building Trades: Carpenters busy. A number of stonemasons and bricklayers idle. Engineering, iron, etc.; Still busy, but a falling-off is anticipated before long. Boot trade: Trade not up to the usual standard at this time of the year. Some factories, however, are fairly well employed. Clothing trade: Slack. Tailoring, hosiery, shirt, and dressmaking factories arc fairly busy. Retail trades (general); No alteration from last report. Good all round business being done. Miscellaneous; Flour, papef, and woollen mills arc very busy; also sash and door factories, preserving, confectionery, and starch works. Unskilled labor: The number of men idle is now slightly on the increase, and the majority of them are well advanced in years. It is expected that a reduction will be made in the ranks of the idle when the Roslyu extension begins. It must be remembered, however, that only the strong men will be taken, and the weaker ones will be left for the Government to assist. During the month thirty-four men were sent to Government works.
