TRAMWAY HOLIDAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As one of the public, and in no way connected with the tramway service, I should like to add one more to the many voices that have been raised to plead for a holiday for the tramway drivers and conductors. Hitherto the generosity of employers has been appealed to in order that they may exercise a little self-sacrifice, and grant to those whom they employ at least one free day. Now the appeal should he' 1 made to the general public to do a similar act of brotherly kindness by declaring against the use of the trams, that are run for their benefit, on this particular day of days. Already I have heard several say that whether the holiday is granted or not they will hot use the trams, and I am glad to be able to add one more to the number taking that stand. A little deed like this on the part of the people of Dunedin is like the cup of cold water that carries with it a blessing. The Tramway Company may lose a little money, the public of the City a little convenience, but the consciousness of the good deed done will not be without its reward Let us try to make everyone happy on the Jubilee day and we will not be the less happy ourselves The jubilee of old; in the early days in Palestine, was the day on which all slaves were set free and all debts cancelled. Even in this later day we cannot do better than go back to the ancient idea. Let us free for a day these slaves of our comfort, and thereby in some degree cancel the boundless debt which we owe Ahem. I trust that this matter may not be allowed to rest until the force of public opinion directs tbc company in their decision. Judged by a iow trade standard it is a worthy act of generosity ; but judged by the higher law of common humanity it is one of simple justice.—l am, etc., One of the Pdduc. Dunedin, June 11.
