The Welsh tin-plate manufacturers, fearing a depression in trade consequent reduction in wages,, have notified the employes of their intention of stopping the works in March. Eleven thousand workers will bo affected.

Mr Hayhes mentioned at this afternoon's meeting of the Benevolent Trustees that the last of the men employed by the Relief Association had been knocked off, with the exception of a forester, whose duties continue.

Thirty men will be selected by MrFarnie for the Otago Central Railway works tomorrow forenoon at the office of the Labor Department, Water street. The majority of the men must be experienced miners. With a view to organising the whole of the station hands of the c lony, the general secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union has been instrusted to compile a directory containing the various sheep stations from Auckland to the Bluff.

At a meeting of the New Zealand Workers' Union on Saturday evening resolutions were passed expressing satisfaction with the trades union sheep-shears used by most of tho members this season. A record for New Zealand was established by Mr Lundon, an ex-president of the union, who shore 3,000 sheep with one pair of the new shears. At Auckland yesterday William Learnwith pleaded guilty to breaches of the Shops and Shop Assistants Act. Mr Ferguson, inspector, said he found that the girls cmployed by accused worked on alternate days ten and fourteen hours, and on Saturday sixteen hours. Mr Northcroft, S.M., fined defendant 5s on each charge and co3ts (£4 7b).
