NAPIER, January 29.
A very severe shock of earthquake was felt shortly after seven o'clock last night. To-day is being observed as a holiday. The annual gathering of the Caledonian Society is the main attraction. The weather is perfect". GISBORNE, January 29.
Prompted by the long spell of drought and the great dearth of water for household purposes existing at the present time, the Borough Council last evening had under consideration the question of a water supply. A committeo of the wholo Council was appointed to go fully into the matter. The residence of Mr J. B. Taylor in North Gisborne was consumed by fire this morning. Insurance, £2BO in the Liverpool and London aud Globe. PAHIATUA, January 29.
At tho Police Court to-day Henry Wagstaff, a brewer at Mangatainoko, was charged with breaches of the Beer Duty Act. On the first charge ho was fined £75, on the second £lO, and on the third £75, and the brewing plant was confiscated.
