DRAINAGE OF THE CITY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I find that an idea has got abroad to the effect that under the new Drainage Act the ratepayers can be put to unheard-of expense in connecting their drains with the proposed new sewers, and also that the City Council can proceed with the work without consulting them. In order to allay any false alarm on these points permit me to say : Ist. That no new drainage works can be proceeded with until a vote of the ratepayers is taken and an affirmative answer given by them. 2nd. All private drain pipes which have been laid since the year 1886 are to be connected with the new drains at the cost of the City Council, and not the individual ratepayer. 3ra. If it is required to alter or connect any private pipe or drain that was constructed previous to 1886 with the sewers, then the cost is charged to the individual ratepayer, and divided into fifteen yearly instalments; so if it cost, say, £lO (an unlikely sum), then the property owner would have to pay the small sum of eight shillings yearly for that period. But what is most important to remember is that nothing at all can be done until the ratepayers by a poll say it shall be.—l am, etc.,

H. S. Fish,

Dunedin, October 21.
