CtTY POLICE COURT.
(Before Messrs W. Farley aud J. Elliott, J.P.s.) Drunkenness. —Michael Royal and a first offender were each fined 2s 6d, or fortyeight hoars’ imprisonment. Two other inebriates, who made their first appearance, were convicted and discharged. Obscene Language. — Daniel M‘Donald was charged with being drunk and disorderly and wi(h using obscene language in High street on Saturday. Mr Hanlon appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty to both charges.—Counsel explained that this was the first time accused had ever been before a court, and as the Bench bad no power to inflict a fine for obscene language he (Mr Hanlon) suggested that accused be fined for being drunk and disorderly, and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence for the other offence. Sergeant O'Neill stated that accused was a young man of good repute.— Fined 2s fid on the first charge, and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on the second.
Theft. William Lindhurst , jun., was charged with theft, on the 9th inst., of a quantity of bacon, two brushes, and one plate, valued at 12s, the property of Walter Towler. Accused pleaded guilty.—Sergeant O’Neill said that on the night in question about 231b of bacon, a set of shoe brushes, and a plate were stolen from Mr Towler’s outhouse at South Dunedin. The police subsequently found the brushes and the ’plate in a swag owned by accused, and Which was left in a house at Caversham. Accused had evidently heard that the police had taken possession of his swag, for he departed and was not seen again until arrested at Silverstream on Saturday morning. Nothing was previously knownagainsttheyouug man.—Fined £1 or a week’s imprisonment.
