FIRE AT HASTINGS.

Horn, bootmaker, forming a portion of Bethell’a (saddler) premises. : The flames had a strong hold before the brigade could get properly to work, and in the course of two hours five of the most centrally-situated business places were levelled. From Horn’s and Bethell’a the Are spread' to Blythe and Co.’s drapery establishment and & Rldgway’s clothier's shop, and both Containing Very inflarhihable material they were speedily demolished. The premises of Nodes (chemist) and Lya (tailor) were also attacked, and, a fierce wind blowing, these new buildings were quickly destroyed. The efforts of the brigade were then directed to saving the premises of Foreman (butcher), and this they succeeded in doing. Had this place caught Gorman’s Carlton Hotel must have gone, but the corrugated iron facings Of the partition wall between Lys’s shop and Foreman’s prevented the flames from spreading further. The brigade had to fight the fire at three points, and with the strong wind that blew it is marvellous that the whole town was not destroyed. The following are the insurances :—Ridgway, clothier, on the stock £3OO in the Manchester, and on the building £IOO in the London and Liverpool and Globe. Blythe and Co., draper, on the building and fittings £450 in the National, on the stock £l2O in the North German. Apperley’s building, comprising the premises of Ecclea teheiftist) and Lya (tailor), is insured for £I,OOO in the North . German; Eceles’s slock for ±2OO in the North German, Lys’s stpok ml. Bpthell, saddler, on the building £230 in the New Zealand Office; and on the stock £250 in the Alliance. - Horn, bootmaker, nil. A fire also occurred at Carlisle street, Napier, on Saturday night, destroying two cottages owned by Tyer, each insured for £IOO in the Imperial, and the furniture for £IOO in the North German.
