WELLINGTON, August 2,
At the criminal sessions, which begin on Monday, there are only nine cases against eleven prisoners, but two of them are charges of murder—viz., Somerville’s case, from Masterton ; and the charge against Kennedy and Jewitt, in which a woman was burned to death by a lamp being thrown at her.
j'Phe arrears claimed by the Crown from tenants in the Wellington district amount to £11,220, of which £2,000 is owing by “ special ” settlers. The Minister has directed that where rents are two years overdue steps .are to be taken to secure forfeiture, subject to the merits of each case. The police have ascertained that the man Whitmore and the two boys reported as missing were found in the bush after two days’ search. Whitmore is to be charged with stealing a watch and gun. NAPIER, August 2.
A largely attended meeting of sheep farmers and those interested In the frozen meat industry was held to-day, when Messrs Nathan and W, Nelson spoke. The latter
said that Mr Nathan’s scheme was thoroughly impracticable. The present cool storage at Home was ampjy sufficient. He combated the theory advanced by Mr Nathan of the existence of a Smitufield ring, and said that as a result of Mr Nelson’s visit Hoine freights nextvyear would probably be reduced by 10 to 15 per cent,'
