A cable has been received in Sydney announcing the loss during a recent hurricane of the barque Southern Chief, of 1,219 tons, off the Californian coast, while on the voyage from Puget Sound to Adelaide with a cargo of timber. All hands were lost. The new department which Premier Reid of New South Wales-foreshadowed in a recent speech is to be called the Department of Labor and Industry, and will take chargo of the Labor Bureau and possess functions akin to the English Board of Trade. It is not intended to appoint a special Minister to the position, and it is believed the Hon. J. Garrard, Minister for Public Instruction, will take charge.
