THE COURTS-TO-DAY.
CITY POLICE COURT. (Before Messrs J. B. Thomson and Colin Allan, justices.) Drunkenness. —Joseph Wikock, against whom there were eighteen~previous convictions, was fined 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment. A first offender was convicted and discharged. Obscene Language.— Walter*J. Dunslan pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, but said he had no recollection of using bad language.—John Bacon, livery stable keeper, said that defendant hired a trap yesterday, and on returning in the evening he made use of disgraceful lauguage—the worst that witness had ever heard—in the hearing of a number of persons who clustered about the door, attracted by the scene of which defendant was she cause. There were some women with him, and one of them also used very bad language.—David Brown, groom, gave corroborative evidence. The Benoh said that defendant's conduct had been disgraceful, but, as he had not been before the Court previously, and seemed to be potry for his offence, and the only punishment for using obscene language was imprisonment, they would fine him 20a, in default seven days' imprisonment, for being drunk ; and in respect to the other charge, he would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.—On the application of defendant, he was"allowed seven dayß in which to pay the fine. The facts were that on Christmas Day Mr Gray set fire to a small quantity of rubbish on his section in Duke street, and a wind suddenly uprising oaused the fire to spread to some scrub, with the result that the fire brigade were turned hi without costs.
