Lipperfc, the absconding manager of&the. Union Bank, Cape Town, has'been ansestjted iii Cincinnati on a charge of having com-; mitted forgeries amounting to £120,000. A serious outbreak of typhoid fever is reported from Syracuse, in Sioily. .' Up to the present 200 cases have been recorded, and upwards of" 100 succumbed in a few days. Mr Cook (manager) and four direotora of the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland have been arrested on a charge of submitting a false balance-sheet by including among the assets securities mortgaged to the London and Westminster Bank to meet advances. The Commission set up to inquire into the depression recommend the Government to endorse 30 per cent, of the Commercial Bank's notes, and 85 per cent, of those of the Union Bank.

A young man named Arthur ConneU, a butoher, employed by Kuch and Co., of Wellington east, was arrested on a charge of assaulting John Chrichton, expressman. It appears Connell was at Dimock's bacon factory with a handcart, when Crichton came up and requested the removal of the handcart, which was not complied with. He then proceeded to remove the cart himself, and capsized it. A scuffle ensued, and Crichton either fell or was knocked down, and, striking his head, was rendered unconscious, and late last evening was in the same condition.
