MELBOURNE, December 29.

At one o'clock this morning more rain fell, and the wicket was completely dreuched. There is not much chance at present of heavy Bcoring to-day.

The heavy thunderstorm yesterday soddened the ground, and the pitch was covered with a tarpaulin for some time,' but the water soaked underneath, and the Ejnglishmeft objected tq the turf being proteoted on the ground of minimising their chances. The tarpaulin was accordingly removed. The weather this morning is fine and drying, but overcast at times. Play to-day will be unoertain. The 'Argus' has a sub-leader urging a postponement of the match till Monday, but the 'Age' maintains that yesterday's break in the weather will emphasise the element of luck. ■ The Englishmen were sent to the wicketp. At the luncheon adjournment the score stood at 44 for five wickets. Ward made 30, Stoddart 10, Macla'ren, Brown, and Rroekwell nothing.
