The chairman of the Benevolent Society, in reply to the charges of extravagance frequently levelled at that body, said that they were spending less than hi Otago, Canterbury, or even Nelson. The inmates in the Home cost 4s 9Jd each per week, while those in tho Otago Home cost 3s fijd. Mr Heal on, one of the opposition, admitted that the recent inquiry was a faroe, and said ihat the objectors had made out a very bad ease.

The local licensed victuallers have formed an association, and elected Mr H. .1. Walter their president. CHRLSTCIIURCH, Jink 7.
An association has been formed here comprised entirely of licensed victuallers. At a meeting last night Captain Pophani was elected president, with a strong committee. The Licensing Committee forChristchurch .South-east refused an eleven o'clock license to Arena's Caf» s Hotel, as a conviction had been endorsed on his license for serving other than a bona fide traveller on Sunday. They, however, granted a ten o'clock license. Several other applications were adjourned on tho ground that the houses required repairing.
