FIRES.
On Friday last 205 sacks of wheat, the property of Robert Pritchard, of Arrowtown, were spoiled by fire on the owner s place at Arrow Junction. The wheat was ia a heap, covered with straw, lyiDR in a paddock. Part had been carted away on the 10th, and at 5 a.m. next day it was seen that the heap was on fire. The neighbors saved what they could, but most of the heap is scorched, and fit only for fowl feed. The whole crop of 780 bags was insured ia the National Office for L3OO, which is less by L4O than the market value. Early this morning a wooden building at Burnside, used as a kid leather factory, was burned down. The fire ia supposed to have been caused by a spark from a passing engine. The building was the property of Mr C. W. Andersen, of South Dunedin, and rented from him by Messrs Schemmel and Miller. The building was insured for L3OO and tho stock and tools for L6O, both policies being issued from the National Office. NAPIER, March 15. The Ferry Hotel at the Western Spit was totally destroyed by fi:e at an early hour this morning. Insurances on the house— Victoria, L 500; Union, L 100; Standard, L3OO. On the furniture—London and Lancashire, L4OO, The firo was discovered by a milkman driving into town. It was found impossible to save the building, but most of the stock in tho bar was got out.
