The question of the practicability of raising water from the River Molyneux for the purpose of sluicing the gold-bearing terrace* hag been talked about for upwards of twenty-five years past. In many boalitles, and particularly In the narrow gorges through which tho river flow?, gold deposits are known to exist at heights varying from a few feet up to several hundredi abovo tho river level. Few of those doposlta have been effectively worked because no Bufficlent supply of water was obtainable at any n asonable cost. It 1b singular that heretofore no steps have been taken to utilise the enormous natural power which the rlvor provider for raising Us own witers. Mr R. M. Smith, of Roxburgh, has lately devoted attention to this subjaofc, with the view of devising means for working a claim lately taken up by his party Immediately below tho Commissioner Flat claim above Roxburgh. Mr Smith proposes to derive his power from the river ourrent by means of a current wheel similar to thoßO which have long been in use for working dredges He intends by this means to raise ten ' heads of water to a height of fifty or sixty feet, which will be Buffiolent for his present purpose I The conditions of the problem are simple. Ten I sluice heads of water are equivalent to 600 cubic feet per minute. This ia equivalent In weight to a little more than 16 tons per miu'ite to be raiaed -to a huight of fifty or sixty feet. The power required is no doubt considerable, but that afforded by tho rivor current, in places where it ia runuir.g swiftly, Is undoubtedly more than sufficient, THB LONDON MARKETS.
