HOBART, January 7. (Received January 8,1892, at noon.)

The Society for the Advancement of Science have opened their sittings, with Sir R. G. Hamilton, Governor of Tasmania, as S resident. A letter was received from Sir . Hector regretting bis inability to attend. The president congratulated the members on the snooess in naming the ooean between New Zealand and Australia the Tasman Sea. The next meeting will be held in Adelaide,, and the following year in Brisbane, The following officers have been appointed for the next meeting:—President, Professor Tate; vice-presidents—Sir R. 6. Hamilton, Baron Ferdinand, Von Mueller, Sir James Hector, Messrs Norton and H. C. Russell, B.A. Professor W. H. Bragg, 8.A., of the University of Adelaide, has been appointed secretary.
