The residence of Mr A. Heathcote, teacher at Wreya Bush, was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday morning. A musical treat was given to the Portobello residents on Wednesday evening by the summer visitors. The Masonio Hall was filled, not a single seat being vacant, and many being content to stand. Mr John M'Cartney, chairman of School Committee, presided; and the lady visitors, directed by Mias Horne, kept the audience interested and delighted with vocal and instrumental music. The Misses Dale gave a trio for two violins and piano, and in response to the demands of the hearers played other items with great skill and taste. Miss Horne sang ‘ Needles and Pins,’ and with Miss Moss gave the duet 'Convent Bells,’ Mrs Downes rendered the old song * Dear little shamrock ’ in such fine voice and style as to call for an encore, and then gave 'The three fishers.’ Miss Christie gave the .Scotch song 'Bonnie woods of Craigilee,’ and Mr Butlin one or two songs. Misses Blakely, Reid, Horne, and Turnbull played selections, and Miss Hooper rendered the song ' No, sir ’ with spirit and taste. The concert closed soon after ten o’clock, and, after votes of thanks had been accorded to the visitors for their kindness, anfi to Mr Moss for the use of his piano, dancing commenced, cud was kept up with vigor qntil daylight dawned. All separated well pleased, and the School Committee should be placed in funds to form a prize fund for the copilng year.
