ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

William Henry Look wood, a station cook, who is supposed to be related to the famous Sheffield cutlery firm of Lock wood Bros., was found dead in his room at Orr's Hotel, Martinborough, yesterday morning. He had been suffering from an aggravated attack of influenza during the past week. The 'Temuka Leader' reports that Mr W. Fleming, jun., of Geraldine, had a cough time of it while attempting to croes the Rangit&ta River on Thursday last, when it was in flood. His horse was swept from under him, and soon after he found himself sticking to a small island in the centre of the river. Not wishing to act the part of Robinson Crusoe he took a header for the river bank, and after being washed down with the stream for about 300 yds, landed safely on the|opposite side, just in time to see his horse land successfully on the side where he had first entered the river. Mrs Buok, living close at hand, kindly provided him with dry clothes and a hone, and he again attempted to cross the river for his own horse. This time he waß again washed away, but managed finally to land both himself and the horses on the right side. Mrs Back's kindness again helped'him, and with another dry outfit ho was enabled to proceed to Geraldine. [By Telegraph.] AUCKLAND. Januaby 7. William Findlay, baker, of Arch' Hill, was thrown from bis horee while riding, and now lies in the hospital with a dangerous injury to his head.
