WORK AND WAGES.
The London Dockers’ Union invite the Trades Union. Congress to support a State Board of Arbitration, with equal representation of capital and labor, LABOR DAY. An enthusiastic meeting of delegates of the various trades unions was held in the Trades Hall on Wednesday night in connection with Labor Day celebrations, and the following unions were represented : Tailoresses, Boot Machinists, Bootmakers, Bootmakers’ Guild, Bakers, Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners, Metalworkers, Moulders, Gasworks Employes, Timberworkers, Amalgamated Engineers, Typographical Association, Seamen, Miners, Shipwrights, Millers, Shop Assistants, Butchers, and Railway Servants.
The Wellington and Christchurch Trades and Labor Councils wrote agreeing to fix October 28 for Labor Day for this year, and it was also intimated that the Auckland Council held the same view. A telegram was received from the Minister of Education (Hon. W. P. Reeves) stating that the Government would ‘Gazette’ the 28 th October as a public holiday. The president and secretary of the Trades and Labor Council were appointed members of the Labor Day Committee ex officio.. Mr A. M'Nanghton was appointed president, and Messrs J. A. Millar and J. Caradns vice-presidents. It eras decided that, as. last year, any surplus arising; from the Committee’s prqSime should be devoted to the building of a trades hall.
The report of the Finance Committee was received and adopted. It showed that LSO will be spent in prize money, exclusive of special prizes, several of which have already been promised. The Committee were instructed to farther wait oh the various sooieties who had offered their grounds for the day’s sports to arrange terms, etc. Consideration of the report of the Sports Committee was held over till next meeting, which is to be held on the 16 th inst.
