THE FEMALE FRANCHISE.
A meeting of ladies and gentlemen was held ia Victoria Chambers last night to consider the present position of the female franchise question. Mr W. M, Bolt, who presided, stated that it was apparent, from information received in town, that the Government had agreed to postpone the coming into torce of the female suffrage measure until January, 1894. He spoke in stroug terms of disapproval of the proposed step, and was followed by others who similarly expressed themselves. It was ultimately agreed to forward the following telegram to the Premier, Sir John Hall, and Mr D, Pinkerton “ Meeting of representatives from numerous societies interested in women’s franchise strongly urge the immediate passage of Bill to come into force not later than next General Election. Consider longer delay gross breach of faith. —W. M. Bolt, chairman of meeting.” The following telegram was sent to Sir John Hall That, in the event of Mr Blake’s amendment being carried, this meeting respectfully suggest that Sir John Hall should withdraw the Bill for the present session.”
The following telegram was forwarded to the Premier yesterday :—“We, the undersigned members of the Executive of the Liberal Association, most earnestly urge that the operation of the Female Franchise Bill be not postponed until after the next General Election, but should come into force next year. — Robert Siout, W. M. Bolt, H, R. Morrison.” __ We understand that quite a host of private telegrams have been sent to the Premier expressing the strongest indignation at the proposal to postpone the operation of the BUI until 1894.
