THE LITE MR HACKWORTH.

Many of our readers will learn with undisguised regret of the death of Mr James Haokworth, which took place last night at Mrs Hertalett's house, Manor place. The deoeased gentleman came from England to this colony with his wife when quite a young man, and settled in Nelson, investing a considerable amount of money in pastoral property. His venture not turning out well, he accepted a situation in the Customs service, and eventually beoame colleotor at Dunedin, an office whioh he held for a long period, retiring on a full pension on the Ist September, 1887, exaotly four years ago within a day. He was altogether over thirty years in the service, and indeed there are only two men now living who are his seniors in the Customs one being Mr Hill, the collector at Auckland, and the other Mr H. S. M'Kellar, the secretary to the department, A fortnight ago to-day Mr Hackworth came out, for the last time as it turned out, and he was then not looking at all well—indeed, his friends made remarks to that effect, and be went home early. He was then living at the Club. That night he was seized with a paralytic attaok, and, so that he oould be the more carefully nursed, he was removed to quiet lodgings. On Monday week he was utterly prostrated by a further seizure of fainting, and from that time to the moment of dissolution n'e was unable to speak, and never thoroughly rallied. Mr Hackworth. who \r«* "» th » 6*th year of his age, leaves fhree sons and two married daughters, one being Mrs R. T, Rhodes, of Tfmarn, He was attended in his last illness by Dr Hooken. Mr Haokworth was known to all his very numerous friends as an extremely amiable and kind-hearted man, unselfish to a degree, and of a most companionable disposition ; and, as we have said, the news of his death will be received with regret by all who knew him.
