My Birthday has been scratched for the A.J.C. Derby, At the Ashburton races yesterday Kilmarnock (11.5) won the Hunterß' Hurdles, Postboy (10.10) the Hunt Club Steeplechase (paying a dividend of L 6 17s), and Maggie (10.7) the Bracelet (paying a dividend of L 9 18a). At a committee meeting of the Dunedin Cyoliog Club it was resolved, in reply to Mr P. Withers's circular re " cash amateurism," that the olub are strongly opposed to the introduction of cash prizes. The route of the opening run on Saturday, 19th September was fixed, and a olub run to Mosgiel deoided on for 26 th September. One mem ber was elected.
Mr T. George will be the delegate of the Central Taieri J.C. at the raciDg conference this month.
A London cablegram says that the latest betting on the St. Leger is 5 to i on (against?) Common. Mr M'Cullooh ("Asmodeus" of the ' Leader') has been appointed judge of the V.R.C., vice Mr Dakin, appointed handicapper. The Totalisator Bill, introduced into the Victorian Parliament, proposes that onequarter of the net profits of the machine shall bo paid into a fund known as the "Support of Charities Fund," which shall be disposed of annually by a vote of the Legislative Assembly for charitable purposes. THE DRAUGHTS CHAMPIONSHIP.
Mr William Warnock (son of Mr David Warnock, of Southland), who is draughts champion of Australasia, arrived in Brisbane on Friday, the 14*h ult, to play a match for the championship title with Mr Robert Mar, the champion of Queensland, Mr Warnock won the title whioh he was called upon to defend at the New Zealand Draughts Congress of 1890, and at a recent tourney held in Sydney he added to it the title of draughts champion of New South Wales. He went to Brisbane at the invitation of the Brisbane Draughts Club, the conditions of his matoh with Mr Mar being that it should consist of twenty-four games at the following openings i—Alma, Bristol, Centre, Cross, Denny, Dootor, Fife, Kelso, Laird and Lady, Single Corner, Souter, and Switcher. Play began on Tuesday, the 18th inst., and was continued on the Wednesday, the soore at the end of the second evening's play being—Mar 3 wins, Warnoch 2 wins and 1 draw. The match closed on the 22nd, resulting in an unexpectedly easy win for Mr Mar, There were to have been twenty-four games, but only eighteen were played, the total scores being —Mar 10, Warnock 3, drawn 5. Mr Mar therefore now holds the title of draughts champion of Australasia.
