SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

GREEN ISLAND TROTTING RACES. The Green Island Trotting Club's initial meeting, held on Saturday at Kirkland'a | paddock, about two miles down the Brighton road, was attended by nearly 500 persona, the weather being simply perfect. The attendance included a large number of visitors from Dunedin, the officials from town being driven out in Mr W. H. Taggart's fonr-in-hand, which was distinctly the "boss of the road." Tho course, just over half a milo round, is pretty well iu a state of nature, but it was by no means bad going. Strict punctuality was observed in starting the races, and, in fact, the arrangements of the club all round were excellent, reflecting great credit on tho officßrß, and warranting the supposition that future meetings of the club will be more largely patronised now that the public have an assurance of good management. Mr C. Simson, the president, acted as timekeeper ; Mr E. Green was judge ; Mr J. GrincUey, starter: Mr ft. Dowse, handicapper; Mr R. Green, clerk of the scales; and these officials and the stewards, with Mr J. Mann a3 secretary, really deserve the thanks of ! all present for providing ft very pleasant outing. Tho only drawback to the sport was that a small minority of horses wero " stiff," one in particular being held in bondage in a most palpable manner. Messrs Mason and Roberts worked the totali3ator and passed through L4Bl. There were two large dividends. It is understood that the LBS 10s was taken by a well-known jockey and a boy from Tokomairiro, who went halves, and it is said that the one ticket on Grainer was held by the owner. Subjoined is an account of the racing : HANDICAP MAIDEN, of 15 sova. Two miles.

A most extraordinary race. Magic led for half a mile, but at a mile Phantom and Cottage Girl were fighting for the front position, which was no Sooner gained by Phantom than he was pulled up, apparently as though his rider thought the race was over. When set going again, Cottage Girl had a long lead, but she went to pieoes in the last quarter of a mile, and was caught at the home turn by Grainer. Both Grainer and Cottage Girl then broke, but the firstnamed recovered himself quicker than the mare, and got home a winner by a couple of Lengths. Magio was a good third, and Phantom on his heels. Time, smin 50sec. On the totalisator, L4S; dividend, L 43 4s. An inquiry as to the conduct of Phantom's rider resulted in the decision that the pulling np was purely a mistake on his part,
