BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION TRUSTEES.

The meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees was held this afternoon and attended by Messrs Solomon (chairman), Haynes, Gourley, Wilson, Brown, Chisholm, Green, Colder, and Swan. «v»«ws nuoivnu iiuui secretary of the Caledonian Society, inviting the inmates of the Institution to attend at the annual gathering. The thanks of the Trustees was placed on record for the invitation, which was taken advantage of by the inmates of the Institution. Fifty copies of the Christmas number of the ‘ Witness ’ were acknowledged with thanks.

A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Institution for the year ending 31st January, 1800, showed the former to be L 9,807 17s 7d, with an additional sum of L 275 17s 5d bank balance from last year (L 10,083 15s), and the latter L 10.035 4s 9d, leaving a balance at the bank of L4B 10s 3d.

The doctor reported on the condition of the inmates, the report being good. In connection with the lying-in cases he referred to that of a girl of fourteen years of age, and considered that it was “ greatly to be wished that our legislators coaid see their way to raising the age of consent, as he was convinced that many of the young girls who became mothers were quite unable to protect themselves.” The doctor also referred to the good management displayed in connection with the Institution.

The Secretary reported one death since last meeting—viz , Samuel Turner, who died on the 2nd inst.

The Chairman drew attention to rather a peculiar case. The secretary of the hospital at Cromwell had telegraphed asking if he should send a man down to the Trustees who bad over LI,OOO in cash. He (the chairman) had replied to send the man down and the Trustees would deal with the case. The chairman also drew the attention of the Trustees to an invitation which Mr Sheridan had kindly sent for the children to attend the theatrical performance to-night.

A number of other smaller matters were considered, and the relief cases were then taken.
