DRAINAGE OF WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, Jui.v 11

The drainage scheme recommended by Messrs Fergusson and Cuthbert is that proposed by Mr Higginson in the report furnished by him some time ago. Mr Clarke's scheme they dismissed on account of the difficulty with the low level sewer and the probability of having to pay compensation through private property. The Shone system which Mr Higginson advocates is worked by compressed air, but the report states that it may be well to consider the application of hydraulics as more economical. They estimate for 75,000 people by the compressed air process that the cost will be L 1.39,100, and for the present popu lation LI 33,700; by the hydraulic system, L 137.440 and L 133.890 respectively. The working cost per annum is estimated at about LSOO less with hydraulics.
