THE TARAWERA'S EXCURSIONS.

The Tarawora returned to Port Chalmetß at 5 a.m. to-day from her first excursion this year to the Sounds. She left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 9th inat., and arrived at the Bluff at 5.35 a.m. on the 10th; embarked passeugers, and left again at 9 a.m. ; passed Puysegur Point at 3.30 p.m. ; steamed slowly up Long Sound, and returned to the anchorage at Cuttle Cove at 6.15 p.m. The eveniug'sentertainment consisted of a concert by the passengers and crew, and a good programme was disposed of. Saturday, the 11th, was a beautiful clear day, several parties being sent fishing jU early as 5 a.m., and returned with a plentiful supply. Shortly after breakfast parties were organised for shooting, sketching, fishing, exploring, etc., for the day's outing, having lunch at the various points of interest. By 5 p.m. the steam launch had picked up the different boat 3 apd returned to the ship. The first dance of the t'rjp was held that evening, and kept up until 11 p.m. She made an early start on the morning of the 12th inst., and entered Dusky Sound at 7 a.m. ; Bteamed up to the head and returned to Wet Jacket Arm, where she anchored at 11 a.m., the weather being very showery. Divine service was held in the forenoon by the Rev. T. Mead, and in the afternoon boats were put fishing, the steam launch taking passengers round this beautiful Sound. She left again at 4.15 a.m. on the ISth inst M and passed slowly through Doubtful and Smith Siunds landing a party of photographers, Messrs Muir, Calvsrt, and Hewett. fteorge Sound was entered at 1 p.m., and she anchored off the waterfalls at 1,45 p.m. After luncli boats were lowered, and several parties started for the falls, which were seen to great advantage, many passengers makin« their way to the top to view the lake. A varied entertainment by the passengers and crew took place in the evening, each item being well received, and after the concert a meeting of the Regatta Committee was held. Tuesday, the 14th, opened with light showery weather, but cleared up shortly after breakfast, and at 9.30 a.m. the ship's guns were'fired announcing the commencement of the regatta. The results were as follow; — Firemen v. Sailqro (three crews).—Won by the fcllowing sailors : J. M'Kay, G. M'Kay, p. M'fjsrmorj, G. Dawson, J. Atto (coxswain) Distance, two mile* Stewards (three crews).—Winning orew: J, Cannon, E. Buohanan, W. Heid. S. Forsyth, S, Howes (coxswain) Distancr, one mile. Passbnoers (three crews).—Winning crew: Messrs Storey, Mead, Blaokhouso, Paton, J. Williams (coxswain). Distance, one mile. Ladies. Race (three crews).—First orew Misses Tabart, Rattray, Sievwright, M'Laren, T. Roberts (coxswain). Second crew: Misses Webster, Maunsell, Rout, Daviofl, J. L. Galbraith (coxswain). Third crew: Misses Miles, Cargill, H. Cargill, hj. J. Williams. This race was, unfortunate'y, sent off to a bad Btatt, the winning orew being some distance ahead before the second and third crews were clear of other. No. 2 crew made a plucky attempt to overtake the winning boat, whioh pa»Bed the winning p:stin3min(dist".nce, half a mile), the second boat being seventeen seconds behind ; the third crew did not enter into the race on recount of the start.

Tjie regatta was py.er by 1 p.m., and after lunch the various boats were employed fishing, exploring, eto. In the evening another concert was held, and a pleasing selection of songs given. She made another start next morning, and entered Milford Sound at 8 a.m., affording the passengers a magnificent view, and anchored pff the City of Milford at 8.30 a.m. ' After breakfaofc an expedition to Lake Ada was organised., Sutherland acting as guide for the fcrjp up.. came on board, having walked over from Lake Te Anau.

The Tarawera left Milford Sound on the homeward trip at 4 p.m. on the 16th, and reached the Bluff at 11.30 a.m. on the 17th; left again at 3.45 p.m., and arrived at Port Chalmers as above.

During her Btay at the Bluff a cricket match, Ladies v. Gentlemen, was played; and on the passage to Port Chalmers an impromptu concert was held in the social hall. A most enjoyable evening was spent, creaking up with ' Auld lang syne.'
