ANOTHER FRUIT PEST.
The Government have received a telegram from the Premier of South Australia complaining that apples have been imported from America containing an insect which is a far worse pest than the codlin moth. From the description. Sir J. Hector thinks it is the apple maggot, which bores through and through an apple, rendering the fruit quite valueless. If so, he agrees it is worse than the moth. The Government have replied asking for further details, and if the pest proves as destructive as it is supposed they will cooperate with South Australia in prohibiting the importation of American apples altogether.
