Mw YORK, December (j. .{Received December i, 1880, at 12.10 p.m./ • The death js announced of Jefiercon Davis. It occurred at Bcauvoir, Missjssjppi, where of late he had lived in retirement. Jefferson Davis :was ..born,.; in Christian County, Kentucky. June 3, 1808. During his childhood his father removed into tho State of Mississippi. Me graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1828, Bnd served with distinction against the Indians until 1835, when he resigned his commission, returned to Mississippi, and married the daughter of General Taylor, afterwards President of tho United States. He became a cotton planter until 1813, -when he interested himself in politics as a Democrat, and took a prominent part in the election of Mr Polk. He was returned to Congress in 1845, and took part in tho debates on the "tariff,"tho " Oregon question," " military affairs." and upon the "preparations for the Mexican War." Upon the breaking out of this contest, he was elected colonel of the Mississippi regiment of volunteers, when he resigned his seat in Congress, and joined the army of General Tuylor on the Rio Grande. Ho was engaged at the storming of Monterey, and in the battle of Buena Vista. At the close of the war ho was offered by Preeident Polk the rank of brigadier-general of volunteers, but declined it. In 1817 he was elected Senator for Mississippi; in 1850 ho became Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs, and was distinguished by the energy with which he defended slavery, and by his zealous advocacy of irtate rights. In 1851 he resigned his seat in the Senate to enter upon a onvass for Mr Franklin Pierce, who on being elected President appointed Mr Davis as Secretary of War. He was again elected as Senator in 1858; but the election of Mr Lincoln in 1860, and tho consequent secession movement, caused him to withdraw. When the movement received shape and form, he was chosen Provincial President of tho Confederate States, February 4, 1861, inaugurated February 22, and elected as President for six years in 1862. After tho fall of Richmond, President Davis, whilo endeavoring to make his escape, was captured at Irwinsvillo, Georgia, May 10, 1805, and remained a prisoner for two years in Fortress Monroe, awaiting a trial. He was released on bail in the summer of 1867, and all proceedings against him were discontinued. After his release he visited Europe, and on his return was for a time president of a life insurance company at Memphis. Dr Barry, formerly Bishop of Sydney, and who recently accepted the coadjutorship of the See of Rochester, will probably succeed the Right Rev. Thomas Legh Clanghorn, D.D., who has intimated his intention of resigning the See of St. Albans. WHERE IS MR PARNELL ? LONDON. December 6. The absenco of Mr Parneil from the recent Nationalist meetings is causing considerable comment throughout Ireland, especially so as his whereabouts at present aro unknown to the public. DRAINAGE REFORM. LONDON, December 6. The Right Hon. Charles T. Ritchie, president of the Local Government Board, has issued a circular to local governing bodies requesting them to secure a thorough system of drainage in connection with the dwellings of tho poor of London. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. LONDON, December 6. The weekly returns of Ml 9 Bank of England, published to-day, show tho total reserve in notes and bullion to be L 11,882,000, being a decrease of L 682.000 as compared with the previous week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 38 per cent. Consols, 97, ex div. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock active at 107. Australian wheat (ex warehouse) is quiet at 393 6d ; New Zealand lone-berried wheat (ex store) is also quiet at 37s 9d. Sugar : The German beet market is quiet at 12s ; Java, 15s 6d. Glasgow pig iron is weakening. The latest quotation is 58s Cd.
