EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The returns of attendance for the quarter ended 31st March, which havo just been compiled by the Education Board, show that there were IS6 schools in operation throughout |tho district, employing i£s6" male ami 244 female teachers, besides 13 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the school rolls at the beginning of tho quarter was 20,775, and at tho end of the quarter 22,922. consisting of 11.597 males and 11,025 females. The average attendance for the quarter was 10,13.3 males and 9,374 females, making u total of 19,507, being an increase of 419 over the previous quarter, and of 383 over tho corresponding quarter of !a3t year. The avergo attendances at the City and suburban schools were:—Georgo strcot 785, Normal C 75, High street (J7l, Albany street 643. Caversham 622, Union street (510, Macandrow road 596, Arthur street 555, Kaikorai 553, Mornington 523, North-east Valley 408, Forbury. 385, Kensington 383, Ravensbourne 202. At Oumaru the attendances were :—South SchooUOl, North School 412, Middlo School 425. At the District High Schools :—Port Chalmers 602, Tokomairiro 338, Lawrence 277, Palmerston 273.
