DUNEDIN LABOR EXCHANGE.

The fortnightly meeting of the Board of 1 Advice was held this day (29th); present— Dr Hislop (chairman), Messrs Martin, Maitland, Logan, Ussher, and Allan (secretary). The secretary submitted the following report:— Since last meeting the applications for work at Hindon by the unemployed have increased. There were xent to the relief works on the 19th inst. ninteen, on the 22nd five, and on the 26fch fifteen; total, 39. A report having been circulated that, in consequence of the high price of provisions at Hindon, the unemployed working there were able to'save little or nothing of their earnings for their families. I took the opportunity of asking the storekeeper* at Christmas Creek and Hindon township to send m» a list of the prices charged to the men on the line. From these lists the Board will see that there were no grounds whatever for any complaints on this score, the prices for groceries and provisions being, as a rule, not higher than town prices, excepting in two or three articles The prices are as follow, viz. :—Bread, 41b loaf, fid; tea, 2s 6d per lb; sugar, 3d and 4d; bacon, 8d and 9d; butter—salt lOd, fresh Is ; mutton, 2Jd per lb; beef, 3d and 4d ; potatoes, 251b, Is; fjour, 501b,Csfid; oatmeal,2slb f Jsfid. Since last meeting there were very few inquiries for men for country work. The applications by employers were; One farm servant, Aswlkern, 1 boy for office, 1 boy for farm, 1 shepherd. Registered: Two blacksmiths, 4 ploughmen, 2 milkers, 1 shepherd, 1 baker. Engaged : One farm servant at 15s per week, 1 lad for station at 10s, 1 milker at 12s, 1 do'at 10s, Ido at Bs.

In connection with the prices of necessaries at Hindon, it was stated to the meeting on official authority, as an illustration of what an industrious steady man of even advanced years has been able to accomplish, that one person past middle age, who had been employed on the Hindon ordinary relief works for the past nine months, has been able to work during that period on an average five days two hours per week.
