PRESENTATION TO MR HARLOW.

A handsome presentation was made this afternoon to Mr VV. B. Harlow, who has for more than fourteen years past been connected with the Lands and Survey Department, and who is now, through the exigencies of Government retrenchment, thrown out of harness. A number of his fellow officers met in the room of the chief of the department, Mr J. P. Maitland, at three o'clock, and that gentleman, in an eloquent speech, referred to the very pleasant relations that had existed between Mr Harlow and himself during their long connection, and added that he had never had a more painful duty to perform than when he had to Inform Mr Harlow of the decision of the Government with reference to his appointment. He trusted, however, that notwithstanding Mr Harlow must at present feel that his severance from the service, was a great misfortune, it might ultimately turn out—as it often happened to others—to be a change greatly to his gain. In wishing him every success and happiness in the future, he had great pleasure in handing to Mr Harlow a massive silver cake-basket, subscribed for by his fellow - officers and by gentlemen who had had occasion to meet him in business. The basket bears the following inscription : "Presented to William B. Harlow on his retirement from the Civil Service by his fellow-officers in the Land and Survey Departments, and by a few friends officially connected with him in business." Mr Harlow, in acknowledging the testimonial, which was accompanied by a very flattering letter signed by all his brother officers and a number of our leading business people, heartily thanked his friends for their kindly feeling, and said he felt proud to feel that he had, during his long term of service, never had a word of discord with any fellow-worker, and that he had earned their liking and respect.
