The English wheat market show’s an improved tendency, and prices are Gd better. The Continental market is unchanged. The American is advancing rapidly, bait it is largely speculative. Mr Thomas Dickson (Parncllite) has been returned for St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, by a majority of 1,877 over his opponent, ISlr lio\)ex*fc Sexton (Unionist). [The representation is unaltered. The late Mr E. Dwyer Gray was returned at the general election by a majority of 2,413 over Sir E. Sullivan (Unionist). — Ed, E.S.] It is expected that H.M.S. Orlando will be commissioned on the 24th inst. Sir James Fergusson, replying to a question in the House, said that the Government were favorable to the policy enunciated by Sir J. B. Thurston for the government of Samoa, hut declined to give any information as to the instructions given to the English delegate to the Conference to he held ut Washington on Pacific Island affairs, saying that it was desirable that those instructions should be kept secret until the Conference had brought its sittings to a conclusion. General Willoughby, who recently served a term of imprisonment for embezzling Government moneys at Madagascar, has been expelled from that place. Mr Stead, editor of the ‘ Pall Mall Gazette,’ intends making a tour through Russia to Merv, returning via Constantinople and Bulgaria. The Emperor Frederick is much improved, and is now able to take a daily walk, attend to correspondence, and receive visitors. The Coptic’s cargo of frozen moat arrived in excellent condition. Prince Bismarck is unwell, and has been ordered complete rest. The death is announced of Rearadmiral Hewctt, of H.M.S., Sultan, of the Channel Squadron.

[Hewett, Rear-admiral Sir William Nathan Wrighte, K.C.8., K.C.5.1., V.C., second son of the late Mr William Wrighte Hewett, by Susan Moore, daughter of the late Rev. John Maddy, D.D., was born at Brighton in 1834. He entered the Royal Navy In 1847, and became lieutenant in 1854, commander in 1858, captain in 1862, and rear-admiral in 1878. He served with the Naval Brigade in the Burmese War and in China, and also in the Russian War in 1854-55, for which he received the Order of the Legion of Honor and the Sardinian war medal. The Victoria Cross, with two dates, was also conferred upon him for conspicuous bravery in the field before Sebastopol and lukerman. For the gallantry exhibited on this occasion the Board of Admiralty promoted him to the rank of lieutenant. He commanded the Beagle at the capture of Keitch and Yenikali, and in the Azoff expedition. During the Ashantee war of 1873-4 he was commodore on the west coast of Africa, and ho was present at Amoaful and the capture of Cooraassie. Fur his services he was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (March 31, 1874). Subsequently he severely punished the Congo River pirates for outrages (1875). He w'as appointed commander-in-chicf on the Hast India station in 1882, and in the same year for his services when in command of naval forces in the expedition to Egypt he received the thanks of Parliament. He was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in 1882. He was charged, in 1884, with a mission to King John of Abyssinia, in order to induce that potentate to aid in the relief of the garrison of Kassala.—‘ Men of the Time.’]
