The Pope has received 41,000 chasubles among his jubilee gifts, many of them being of gold and richly jewelled, and there is a huge Bible, sent by the King and Queen of Saxony, with gold binding and clasps, which is valued at L 3.000. The monks at Chartreuse have presented His Holiness with L 20.000 in cash; and a rose of diamonds, which came from South America, is valued at L 25.000. The jubilee has been a fine "boom," for the value of the gifts is estimated at three and a-half millions sterling. The Mahomedans have ninety-nine names for the Deity, but no Mahomedan ever uses all of them until he mashes his finger in tacking down the carpet.
