NATIVE AFFAIRS.

The following are the proposals submitted to Tawhaio by the Hon, Mr Mitcbelson, on behalf of the Government, at the Native meeting at Whatiwhatihoe :—"The Government will provide land for Tawhaio and his people in such areas as may be approved by I'arliament and such places as may be suitable ; and where land is available, the wishes of Tawhaio and his people will be considered in fixing localities. Such of the confiscated lands at Mangare (formerly owned by Potatau) as remain undisposed of to be returned to Tawhaio and his people, and a residence erected there for Tawhaio if he desires it. The Government will make such provision for Tawhaio as may be arranged between the Government and himself, so as to enable him to live in comfort 'and work cordially with the Government for the good of the Maori people. To ensure the land to Tawhaio and his people, it shall be made inalienable by sale or lease. The only sonditions which on their behalf the Government consider it necessary to attach to these proposals are that Tawhaio and his people should generally take the oath of allegiance to the Queen, and that Tawhaio and his people shall occupy the land provided for them."
