A PUBLIC MARKET WANTED.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Allow me to reply to your correspondent “N.Z. Yet,” in your issue of last evening. Some fifteen months ago I pointed out in the columns of the 1 Daily Times ’ the finest site in this city for a public market, i.e,, alongside the railway station, on the west side, in that bend of Cumberland street, extending from High street to Rattray street, and facing the Triangle. This broad sweep of asphalted footpath has (through the action of Cr Gramond) been granted by the corporation to producers on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from daylight up to about 10 a.m., for a very nominal fee. Cr Hardy also recently brought the matter of a fublic market before the council, but was, believe, not aware at the time that this site was approved of. However, it was referred to the General Committee of the council, and they reported that as this market site was already sanctioned they had nothing further to recommend on the subject, As an open market site it cannot be excelled—it is most central, and alike accessible by road, rail, or water; yet the farmers, dairymen, market gardeners, fruitgrowers, and others have not availed themselves of it. They are making a terrible din about hard times and low prices, and it is to a certain extent their own fault in not offering their various products to the consumer direct. This market site was also written about in the ‘ Witness ’ about twelve months since. I also suggested a market day for hay and straw, as is the case in Auckland. —I am, ets., Utility. Dunedin, March 28.
