FATALITIES.

♦ John Cass, brother of Mr B. Cass, draper, formerly of Christchurch and Auckland, and now of Melbourne, was found dead yesterday morning in his house at Christchurch. Deceased lived alone, and was last seen alive on Tuesday. At the inquest a verdict of " Death from natural causes " was returned. He has relatives at Nelson and in Canterbury. James Coulters, a farmer at Waiwetu, was drowned while crossing Wainui-Omata (Wellington) River at 2.30 on Wednesday afternoon. Coulter and his brother-in-law (Sinclair) were crossing the river on horseback when they were washed off. Deceased attempted to save himself by clinging to his horse's rein, but it broke and he was drowned. Sinclair saved himself by clinging to his horse's mane. The body was recovered. During the voyage of the steamer Staffa from Hokianga to Kaipara, M'Lellan, the engineer, was washed overboard and drowned. Ton Wa, a Chinese gardener, 37 yenrs of age, died yesterday afternoon in Walker street. Deceased had been ill during the three mouths since his arrival in the colony, and on Thursday was brought in from Forbury to the house of Ching You, in Walker street, so that he might be attended to by Dr Brown. Aa Ton Wa was apparently getting worse, Ching You decided to take' him to the hospital, but the cab had only just started when Ton Wa expired. The body was taken back to Ching You'a, and the matter at once reported to the police, There being nothing unusual about the case. Coroner Carew has not deemed it necessary to hold an inquest.
