"AUSTRALIAN'S" FIGURES.

TO THE EDITOB. Sib,—Your correspondent " Australian has made an enormous blunder in his letter in to-night's Star. He states that the public debt of New South Wales to the end of 1885 was L 30,064,259. He totally ignores the loan of five and a half millions made by New South Wales in 1885 as a matter of no moment. The following is, according to Hayter, the public dpbt of New South Wales and Victoria ending the 31st of December, 1885 and 1886 : New South Walec Victoria, 18S5 - £35,604,260 1385 .. £28,828,588 1880 .. 41,034,249 1888 .. 50,114,£03 I would be sorry to think "Australian" wilfully made the above misstatement, but no one can free from censure the careless

writer who misleads the public. I trust "Australian" will take warning by this exposure, and not rush into print until he is able to verify his figures. '« What a peevish fool was he of Crete, who taught his son the office of a fowler, and yet for all his wings the fool was drowned." I hope you will give this letter an early publicity ; the bane and antidote should go together.—l am, etc., New Zkalasuer. Dunediu, March 23.
