FIRE AT OAMARU.
Shortly before three o’clock this morning a fire broke out at Messrs Reid and Gray’s implement works, Thames street. By tiie time the bell rang the fire had a good hold on the wheelwright’s shop, which formed a section of the main building. In less than ten minutes the whole of the wheelwright s shop was gutted, and the machinery in the next department was wrecked. The fire had a hold of the blacksmith’s shop and the shoeing forge before the brigade arrived, but they succeeded in saving the firm’s office. The fire is supposed to have originated about the engine, which stood in the wheelwright s shop. Nothing was saved from the implement works. The ‘N.O. Times’ puts down the loss at between L 4.000 and L 5,000 ; but we are informed that this is a very exaggerated estimate. The loss is under LI,OOO, and is fairly covered by insurance.
