SERIOUS FIRE AT BALCLUTHA.

We lulve private information that a fire broke out last night in the. store of T. M‘Kenzie and Co. at, Balcjutha, apd destroyed it and. the Athomcum adjoining. The Crown Hotel and the shop of Mr Hutchins (chemist) were also badly damaged. We give the insurances as far as they have reached us : M’Kenzie’s store.—On the stock ; South British, LI,OOO (half reinsured); Liverpool, London and Globe, Union, and Royal, 1/500 each ; Phcenix, L 625 ; Australian Alliance and Norwich Union, LSOO each; North German, L 375; Standard and Equitable, L 250 each. Total, L 5.000. Building: L3OO in the Equitable. The Athemcum was insured, but in what offices we cannot state.

Tho Press Agency send us this meagre account: —Mackenzie and Co.’s store and stock, also the Athemeum, were burned down last evening. The fire originated in the store at 8.30, About L 7.000 worth of property have been destroyed. The full insurances. The Crown Hotel had a very narrow escape, as also the shop and dwelling of Mr Hutchins, chemist. The stock and furniture of the latter were all removed.
