DISEASE AMONG SHEEP. Sydney, March 13, (Received March 13, 1888, at 1.20 p.m.)

A departmental report has been made public with reference to the disease among sheep recently reported from Southern Queensland, New England district, New South Wales. The report states that the mange is contagious and very difficult to eradicate.

THE LOCOMOTIVE CONTRACT ABANDONED.

The' Sydney Morning Herald' states that the manufacturers have declined to take up the locomotive contract recently offered them by Government on the ground that it would be impossible to carry out the work under the conditions, and at the price proposed by Government, except at a loss to themselves.

MORE PROTECTION WANTED. Melbourne, March 13. The woollen manufacturers are agitating for increased duties on imported goods.

,WORKING MEN'S COLLEGE. Melbourne, March 13. Twelve hundred and fifty-six students have entered the Working Men's College.

TELEPHONIC COMMUNICATION AT NEW GUINEA. Brisbane, March 13. It is proposed to establish telephonic communication between the various missionary stations in New Guinea.

INCREASED GOLD YIELD. Brisbane, March 13,

The gold yield for the year is estimated at 4-ll,ooooz, being 70,0000z above the yield for the year ending 31st December, 1887.

VICTORIAN VOLUNTEER REVIEW.

The Queensland volunteer contingent will go to Melbourne to attend the review of colonial troops to be held during the Exhibition season, provided that Parliament consents to allow them to loavo the colony.
