EMPEROR WILLIAM'S DEATH. Sydney, March 12.

The German residents in the various Australian capitals intend holding solemn religious services in connection with the dtath of His Majesty the Emperor, and in accordance ■with the formalities prescribed to be used in churches on the death of a Sovereign.

MANUFACTURING LOCOMOTIVES. Sydney, March 12. In connection with the recent offer made by the Government for the manufacture of locomotives within the colony, the local manufacturers intend to ask the workmen (o consider the matter, as the work can enly be taken up if the men will consent to a reduction of wages. The ironmasters say that they will accept the work if Government will increase the price to be paid for each locomotive from L 3,000 to L 3,260 each, and will be content with a profit of 5 per cent. On a fowner occasion the men refused to agree to a reduction in wages.

THE NEW HEBRIDES. Sydney, March 12. The Union Company of New Zealand have entered into an agreement with the Government to run a steamer to the New Hebrides regularly.

LOCAL OPTION POLL. Melbourne, March 12. Under the new Licensing Act the residents of Port Melbourne demanded a poll to determine the number of licenses to be granted by the local Licensing Bench. A poll was taken on Saturday, with the result that, by a majority of eight, the residents declared that the number of hotels should be reduced by one-half.

SATISFACTORY.

Brisbane, March 12.

The disease among the horses which recently appeared in different parts of the colony is pronounced to be merely due to the heat and damp, and it is not contagious.

INTEIIPROVINCIAL.

AUCKLAND, Marcii 12.

Admiral Fairfax and party returned from the Hot Lakes on Saturday night. During their tour they made an ascent of Tongariro.

The criminal sessions opened to-day before Mr Justice Gillies. There are twentynine charges on the calendar, but none are of a grave character. Gray, who attempted suicide on Saturday, is likely to recover. He threatens to repeat the attempt as soon as he is set at liberty.

GISBORNE, March 12.

A shock of earthquake was felt this morning, lasting five or six seconds. The general direction was from S.W. to N.E.,butwas irregular in movement. CHRISTCHURGH. March 12.

On Friday night the engine and vat at Rosewarne's slaughter - yards, Cashmere road, were destroyed by fire with five tons of tallow. The premises were insured in the Equitable Office for L2OO.
