[Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 18, Ernest Manning, a young man, formerly residing at Taranaki and latterly at Parnell, fell from the wharf at Dargaville last night and was drowned, the body never rising. The ‘ Star ’ points out that the Calliope Dock is the only one in the colonies the Nelson can enter without being lightened. At Melbourne her draught has to he reduced to 25ft, and at Sydney to 28ft before docking, whereas the Calliope Dock, with 80ft of water on the sill, allows docking fully equipped, ASHBURTON, February 18. Some Cornish miners of experience have been operating on the alleged tin find at Alford Forest, and have obtained globules of tin the size of peas. Scientists have reported adversely as to tin existing, on the ground of the country not being of the right formation; but the miners assert that indications of tin bearing country (granite and kaolin) are present in great quantity. It is likely that four companies which have been formed will join their forces and sink a shaft to test the value of the reef.
